Food allergens are components of foodstuff and additives that when digested, in contact or inhale cause an immune reaction known as food allergy.

Although some allergies occur more frequently than others, and there are about 160 foods that can cause allergic reactions, the most common ones are those to the cow milk, eggs, legumes (including soy), wheat/gluten, fish, shellfish, fruits, and nuts, such as peanuts and walnuts.

A group of members from the Ministry of Agriculture, The State Animal Breeding Supervision Service, State Food and Veterinary Service, State Laboratories as “Pieno Tyrimai“ and dairy companies spent few days in Spain visiting dairy companies and dairy laboratories together with Zeulab.

Algal blooms in freshwater lakes

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are unicellular prokaryotes that thrive mainly in freshwater lakes. Being autotroph organisms they accomplish oxygenic photosynthesis playing a significant role in the food chain of several ecosystems. However, under certain circumstances (eutrophication, climatic change, etc.), they can grow and lead to uncontrolled blooms.

The Italian Ministry of Agriculture (Ministero delle alimentari Agricultural Policies and Forestry) has developed a plan to support and improve the quality of milk and dairy products.

According to the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2014-2023, “world milk production is projected to increase by 180 Mt by 2023 when compared to the base years (2011-2013), the majority of which, 78%, is anticipated to come from developing countries”.

This increase particularly obeys to the rise of population and its income, followed by the expanding popularity and demand of dairy products, mainly due to a westernalisation of consumer preferences and diets in developing countries.

Already in 2012, the USA was the world leader producing almost 91 Mt, followed by India with 54Mt and China producing nearly 38Mt. Brazil held the 4^th and Germany the 5^th position in the ranking by producing respectively 32.3Mt and 30.5Mt, respectively.

Zeulab has collaborated with Oxfam Intermon after finishing the social campaign that took place during 2014.  Zeulab has donated 1% of MicroCystest sales to Oxfam Intermon, collaborating with "A world without Water" campaign, helping Ethiopian families to have access to clean drinking water.
